Pálmarsson third Icelander in the history of Barça handball

Aron Pálmarsson's arrival at the Palau will be the third instalment of an Icelander playing for FC Barcelona handball. The new centre will be the third player in the Club’s history to come from Iceland.

The first arrived in 1979 and left in 1981. His name was Viggo Sigurdsson, and he was born in Reykjavík in1954. Sigurdsson was a right back. In the intervening years, the Club had lots of Nordic players from Denmark, Sweden, and Norway but they had to wait another 30 years until another Icelander arrived.

In the summer of 2014, Gudjon Valur Sigurdsson signed for Barça as an experienced 34-year-old left winger from THW Kiel. The Icelandic goalscorer stayed with the Club for two seasons until the summer of 2016 when he moved back to Germany for a second spell with Rhein-Neckar Löwen. He is still playing for them aged 38.

The second Sigurdsson won the Champions League, two Asobal Leagues, two Copa del Rey trophies, and two Copa Asobal trophies with Xavi Pascual’s side.

We didn’t have to wait so long for the third to come along as Iceland is represented once again by Aron Pálmarsson who arrives at the Palau to add his attacking quality and leadership to the team.
