FC Barcelona reaffirms commitment to equality on International Women's Day

With the slogan ‘The Blaugrana Family for Equality’, the club has created a campaign to represent unity among everyone involved with FC Barcelona

Along with diversity and inclusion, equality is one of FC Barcelona's founding principles. International Women's Day is celebrated every 8 March, and this year the club is reaffirming its commitment to equality through a number of activities aimed at raising awareness about unity among people in the FC Barcelona family.

The quest for equality and being the first to achieve it is a target for FC Barcelona, and it comes from values that make the institution More than a Club, that make Barça transcend far beyond football and sport in general, whereby being a Barça fan feels like being part of a family.

Recent seasons have seen the 'Barça Lilac' and 'Equality is in our colours. Empowering future generations' initiatives, combining the blaugrana colours. This year the combination of colours leads on to the unity between the people in the FC Barcelona family, without whom it wouldn't exist, creating the 'Blaugrana family for equality' concept.

'Blaugrana family for equality'

Just one photo. Just one image that represents the Club in the most significant and real manner. Just one flash integrating the different people who make up the blaugrana family. A visual impression that conveys unity, strength, diversity from the club's different groups, and this commitment to equality.

The image features member groups, supporters' groups, and fans, plus club staff, including the Board of Directors and players.

Held at the Estadi Johan Cruyff, the photo call gathered together over 125 people to join president Joan Laporta, vice-president Elena Fort, director responsible for futsal Aureli Mas, and deputy spokesperson for the Board of Directors Miquel Camps; along with Barça Genuine team members, and athletes from La Masia. 125th Anniversary Commissioner David Carabén and the creators of the CAT mascot, brothers Carles and Jordi Grangel were also there.

In addition to the photo, there is a video that brings the photo to life and conveys the essence of what 'Blaugrana family for equality' means.

Commemorative initiatives and activities

The concept will be rolled out as different activities that will take place over the coming days during the club's events, and will give rise to other merchandising items such as a charity tote bag that will be on sale in the FC Barcelona official stores. The benefits from this Barça Foundation initiative will go to Club Esportiu Jeroni de Moragas, an organisation committed to sport and equality. They are a leading entity when it comes to promoting the social inclusion of young people with learning difficulties through playing sport, and rhythmic gymnastics in particular.

A commemorative plaque has also been specially created for the date and has been given to 125 leading women in their fields, women who FC Barcelona wanted to involve in this road to equality. Carme J. Nebot, Ona Carbonell, Pilarín Bayés and Rosalía just some of the recipients of this unique piece.

The "Blaugrana Family for Equality" project will be prominently featured at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, Estadi Johan Cruyff, and Palau Blaugrana on the occasion of several matches throughout March. The campaign will debut this Saturday at Montjuïc, where Barça’s men’s team are facing Osasuna in La Liga. Things continue on March 9 at the Estadi Johan Cruyff, where Barça Femení will take on VCF Femenino in La Liga F, and also at the Palau Blaugrana for the basketball game against La Laguna Tenerife. Club partners will also be helping to generate more exposure for women in football by adopting the now-iconic ‘Barça Lilac’ for their advertisements on the stadium perimeter screens.

Other matches carrying the same theme include a friendly between AJ FCB Femení and a team of AFE veterans on Friday 8 March at 8pm CET at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper.

Chat with club employees

FC Barcelona ran a talk yesterday for club employees on the topic of "Women and Power." The session was led by Marta Pontnou, a communication consultant, writer, and media contributor, and attended by vice-president Elena Fort. The discussion focused on aesthetic pressure as a tool to weaken women, and provided strategies to address the psychological pressure that affects women across all professions.

More than half a century of support and recognition

FC Barcelona has been a pioneer in promoting women in sports, particularly through its commitment to women’s football for over 50 years. And the club has continued to create female role models, now more earnestly than ever, reaffirming its commitment to gender equality and equity in sports, while fostering an inclusive environment for the whole blaugrana family.
