Barça One premieres 'Barça Masterpieces' documentary on FC Barcelona's first digital artworks.
Barça One is proud to present the new documentary Barça Masterpieces, offering an in-depth look at the creative process behind FC Barcelona’s first Masterpieces, a series of unique NFTs that reinterpret the club’s essence in the digital realm. Now available on the club’s streaming platform, the production explores the intersection of digital art, technology, and sports, highlighting Barça’s strategic commitment to embracing technology and innovation while creating cultural moments to inspire fans.
The documentary delves into the history of these pioneering artworks, a project spearheaded by Barça Vision. It follows their journey from conception to their exhibition at the prestigious Moco Museum, where they became part of an unprecedented artistic experience. Through interviews with artists, blockchain experts, and club representatives involved in this digital art initiative, Barça Masterpieces illustrates how FC Barcelona transcends football to drives the arts as well. In a Way, Immortal, featuring Johan Cruyff, and Empowerment, dedicated to Alexia Putellas, are the central pieces of the documentary.
Among the people who appear in the documentary are Michael Casey, CEO of Tell Network; Ursula O’Kuinghttons, CMO of Scytale Digital; Rhi Madeline, The World of Women artist and creator of the Empowerment Masterpiece; Bryan Bachner, Managing Director Americas & APAC at FC Barcelona; Alexia Putellas from the FC Barcelona’s women’s football team; and Jordi Cruyff, son of Johan Cruyff. These interviewees all share their perspectives on the digital art project and its connection to the football world.
Unprecedented exhibition
The exhibition at the Moco Museum was called Masterpiece. A digital tribute to Johan Cruyff and Alexia Putellas, where visitors in Barcelona and Amsterdam had the chance to experience these two digital Barça artworks. The renowned museum dedicated some of its most distinguished spaces to showcase the pieces, even painting the exhibition room walls in 'Barça Lilac, a colour symbolizing equality that was created by blending Barça’s traditional blue and garnet hues, for the display of Putellas’ digital sculpture.
The launch of the club’s first-ever NFTs marked a new step toward honouring legendary figures and historic moments at the club, enriching its legacy and heritage, reflecting Barça’s commitment to technology and innovation as a means to both educate and inspire fans—particularly millennials, xennials, and Gen Z. Thanks to the overwhelming success of the two exhibitions at the Moco Museum, FC Barcelona has been able to successfully connect with new audiences, spreading its values and history worldwide.
First Masterpieces
The club’s first-ever NFT, In a Way, Immortal, recreates Johan Cruyff’s legendary moment at the Camp Nou on 22 December 1973, when the Dutch superstar appeared to 'fly' while putting a crucial goal past Atlético Madrid goalkeeper Miguel Reina. This NFT was auctioned live at Sotheby’s in New York, one of the world’s most prestigious auction houses, fetching $693,000.
The second Barça NFT Masterpiece, Empowerment, captures Alexia Putellas’ extraordinary performance in the Champions League semifinal against Wolfsburg. In a record-breaking match attended by 91,648 fans, Putellas scored twice and continued championing women’s empowerment in sports. This NFT was sold for $300,231.36 at a digital auction on OpenSea, the leading marketplace for digital collectibles.
