Sally Jenkins wins Vázquez Montalbán International Award for Sports Journalism

US journalist and writer Sally Jenkins has been named the winner of this year’s edition of the Vázquez Montalbán International Award for Sports Journalism by a jury formed by Jordi Basté, Ramon Besa, Ernest Folch, Sergi Pàmies, Jaume Pujol-Galcerán, Borja de Riquer, Santiago Segurola, Josep Maria Solé-Sabaté and Mònica Terribas.

Born in Texas and raised in New York, Sally Jenkins has a degree in English literature from the University of Stanford. A sports columnist on the Washington Post, she has been recognised in many ways throughout her career, such as being named United States Sports Columnist of the Year by the Associated Press Sports Editors (2001, 2003, 2010 and 2011) and the Society of Professional Journalists (2001 and 2011). In 2013, she received the AP award for a series of investigative journalism articles written with Rick Maese on medical care in the NFL called “Do Ho Harm”. In 2005, she became the first woman to be inducted into the National Sportswriters and Sportscasters Hall of Fame.

Jenkins has authored 12 books, four of which entered the New York Times list of best-sellers, including the autobiographies of cyclist Lance Armstrong. She also penned “The Real All Americans,” a historical account of Carlisle Indian School and its impact on football’s Ivy League in the early 20th century. Jenkins’ work has been published by Smithsonian, GQ magazine, Sports Illustrated and Parade.

The award recognises a groundbreaking woman in the world of sports-writing, and her courageous outlook on the current state of sport in North America and her splendid historical research.

This prize has been awarded since 2004 in memory and tribute to the journalist and sculptor Manuel Vázquez Montalbán, and features two categories, cultural/political journalism, and sports-writing. The latter is presented by the Catalan Journalism Association and FC Barcelona.
