Agreement to rescind Rafa Márquez's contract

The Mexican coach to leave Barça Atlètic to seek a new professional challenge

Rafa Márquez will not continue as coach of Barça Atlétic. The Mexican coach has reached an agreement with FC Barcelona to rescind his contract as he seeks to take on a new professional challenge.

The Club would like to thank Rafa Márquez for his dedication and professionalism during his time as coach in which he became a fundamental figure in the players' development and wishes him all the best in the future on both a professional and personal level.

Two splendid years

The Mexican was a Barça player between 2003 and 2010, winning four league titles and two Champions League amongst other titles. In the summer of 2022 he took over as coach of Barça Atlètic, his first coaching job after an illustrious playing career.

In his first season in charge Márquez led Barça Atlètic to the promotion play-offs where they were defeated in the semi final by Real Madrid Castilla. Nevertheless, the campaign was great success in terms of the player's development and experience.

The following season, with the youngest squad in the Primera Federación, Barça Atlètic once again reached the promotion play-offs. The team reached the final where they were narrowly edged out by Córdoba over two legs, drawing 1-1 at home and losing out 2-1 away in the second leg. Under Rafa Márquez several Barça Atlètic players made the leap up to the first team at FC Barcelona.

The Mexican leaves after 82 games in charge at Barça Atlètic over two seasons, with 40 wins, 21 draws and 21 defeats his record.
