Lamine Yamal, record breaking assist

Spain are through to the semi-finals of Euro 24, and they did it by beating a host nation for the first time at one of the two major tournaments. The opening goal of the 2-1 win over Germany came from a Lamine Yamal assist for Dani Olmo shortly after half-time. It was the third that the teenager has set up in the competition.

The Germans managed to cancel that one out, but they were eventually beaten 2-1 and Spain will now face France in a battle for a place in the grand final in Berlin.

Leader for assists

And to think that the Barça starlet is still just 16 years old! For someone that young to even be playing at the Euros is extraordinary enough in itself, but to do be playing such a starring role in a team that is doing so well is simply out of this world.

It wasn't Lamine's best game of the tournament, but even without shining at his best, he was still able to make a key contribution. The sign of a great player. And that assist for Olmo means he is now top in the Euro 24 ranking for assists with three, a position he shares with Xavi Simons of the Netherlands (who plays today against Turkey).

History...

And there's another record to add to his increasing list for he is the first player under the age of 20 to ever make three assists in the same European Championship, beating the record held until now by Michael Laudrup of Denmark, who was 20 at Euro 1984 and would later play for Barça, followed by Arjen Robben in 2004 and another Barça man Cesc Fábregas in 2008, who now drops off the 'podium'.

More to come?

Cesc Fàbregas was one of just three Spanish players to give three assists in the same Euros, the others being David Silva (2012) and Dani Olmo himself (2021). But now the club has been expanded to include Lamine Yamal, who still has one game and possibly a final too in which to set a new record for Spain. A player who just can't stop making history could have another record... while if he scores, yet more records would tumble!
