30 years since first Copa de la Reina win

Captain Kety Pulido lifted the first competitive trophy for the blaugrana women's side with victory over Madrid side Oroquieta Villaverde

On June 26, 1994, when still called Club Femení Barcelona and not yet a Club-supported team, the blaugrana women's football side won their first official national trophy, the Copa de la Reina. The first ever trophy for CF Barcelona was the Copa Generalitat, which had been won nine years earlier in 1985.

Club Femení Barcelona reached the 1994 Copa de la Reina final after eliminating Espanyol, Cornellà and Sabadell. The decisive game came at Las Rozas in Madrid on June 26 against Oroquieta Villaverde, a team also from Madrid. What's more, referee Megía Dávila was also born in Spain's capital.

Around 400 spectators were at the Navalcarbó stadium to watch a match played in intense heat, with the vast majority supporting Oroquieta. The blaugranes were not favourites at all against the 1993/94 Liga winners, having finished third and eight points behind the Madrid side. However, CF Barcelona turned the tables with a deserved 2-1 win.

CF Barcelona were better set up and justified winners of the Copa, even though Megia Dávila gave the blaugrana defender Mari Ángeles a red card for a provocative gesture as she reacted to an opponent's insult. However, Barça Femení went ahead through goals by Olga Huertas after 16 minutes and a penalty by África Ocaña after 35 minutes. Considered the best player in Spain at the time, Mari Mar scored in the second half to reduce the lead and then she had a penalty in added time, but Barça's keeper, Roser Serra, who was carrying a foot injury almost the entire game, performed heroics. Mari Mar's shot was low and close to the post and looked impossible to save, but Roser stretched her injured foot to divert it for a corner. Extra-time avoided with the game almost complete after playing virtually ninety minutes with one fewer player in oppressive heat.

The story didn't end there though, because Oroquieta sent the corner in while the blaugrana players were still on the floor hugging their keeper. Luckily nothing came of it and the game soon ended. Barça were crowned Copa de la Reina champions and a triumphant Kety Pulido and her teammates lifted the trophy.

The team sent out by coach Luis de la Pena that day were Roser Serra, Ana García Ani (Marina Millán), Kety Pulido, Mari Àngels Grau, Olga Huertas, Àfrica Ocaña, Maria Isabel Martín Isu, Carolina Juliench, Esther Inglés (Ariadna Vinyoles), Maite Datzira and Mari Carmen Arias.

The players arrived early the following morning in Barcelona and first thing they did is testament to their character, given they went to the home of Nuria Llansà, manager of Club Femení Barcelona to show her the trophy, much to her surprise. Llansà wasn't able to attend the match due to an untimely illness.

Coincidentally, eight years later on June 26, 2002, Club Femení Barcelona became an official Club team, under the name of FC Barcelona Femení. The team turned professional in summer 2015 and has gone on to accumulate thirty seven competitive titles, while currently dominating in both Spain and Europe.
