Pedri and Ilkay Gündoğan confident of good end to season
Getting better to win. Pedri and Ilkay Gündoğan are confident that there is still time for the team to great things this season. In a sit down with media from Asia, the blaugrana midfielders had a look at the team's current form and their objectives for the rest of the season. According to the two players, the most important thing is to focus on winning league matches and getting past Napoli in the Champions League quarter finals.
"We have lacked consistency"
"A lot of things have happened this season but right now we can still get better and win," said Ilkay Gündoğan. Despite the team not being at its best at certain moments of the season, the German midfielder still believes the team has the chance to achieve great things this season: "We know that the league will be difficult, we are trying not to think about the table, and in the Champions League we have to do our job and get through."
Pedri, for his part, agreed with his fellow midfielder. "I would like to win the two trophies that remain," said the Canary Islander before adding the team must "put together a good run in the domestic competition and continue fighting like in the game against Napoli in the Champions League."
Right now, Xavi's team are on a good run but the two players are aware that this has not always been the case this season: "I think during the season we have played some good football but we have lacked consistency. We are in a process in which we are improving little by little, but I think we have what we need to be at the top," said Gündoğan.
"The future of the Club is assured"
On his arrival, Gündoğan immediately settled into the role of veteran on the team. The German joined a squad full of talented young players and according to the midfielder "players like Pedri, Lamine and Gavi have shown their potential and still have a chance to learn and get a lot better." Gündoğan, like everyone, has been shocked by the talent show by players who age between 16 and 20 years of age. "The future of the club, with the talent that there is at La Masia, is assured," he concluded.
Pedri, despite being part of this talented group of young players, is almost considered a veteran thanks to his composure out on the field. Despite not having come through La Masia, the midfielder has adapted perfectly to the team's way of playing. "There are a lot of lads from La Masia who have had the club's values taught to them since they were little. There are a lot of young players with an excellent future. Further along, we can have a better team."
Goodbye to Xavi
Both midfielders admitted that they will be sad to see the current coach leave. For Gündoğan, Xavi was the reason that he chose to sign for FC Barcelona, and for Pedri he has been a role model since he was a youngster. "I am sad he is going because I think he is a great coach with a lot of personality. In the dressing room we respect his decision and from now on we have to be play as well as we can for him," confessed the German. For Pedri, Xavi's changed the dynamic at the club: "Last season we won the league and thank to him we have improved individually and collectively - he has give us a lot."
