Sonia Bermúdez
Sonia arrived at Barça in 2011 from Rayo Vallecano and was soon demonstrating her excellent football qualities. Equipped with a great vision of the game, speed and superlative scoring ability, the forward from Madrid wore the Barça shirt during a triumphant period when the club won its first four league championships. Sonia Bermúdez was the top scorer in the competition in all four of those campaigns, including 2013/14, despite the fact that in April 2014 she had temporarily left the club to briefly try her luck in the United States at the Western New York Flash.
In total, in 141 official matches she scored 123 goals, a figure that has only been surpassed by Alexia Putellas and Jennifer Hermoso at Barça. At the end of the 2014/15 season she left for Atlético Madrid.
After she retired from active duty, Sonia stated what should have been obvious: “Sometimes I get a little tired of talking about women's football as a social cause, but it is. We are still far from the men’s game. We have played in large stadiums, but we also need to be able to train all week on natural grass and be able to travel by high speed train or plane.”
Five years earlier, she had addressed a similar sore spot when she said: “To play football as a woman, your priority must be to aspire to be happy before wanting to fill your pockets with money.”
