Two years of Xavi as FC Barcelona manager

His first game in charge was against Espanyol on 20 November 2021

How time flies! It is already two years since Xavi Hernández took his seat on the Barça bench for the first time in a derby against Espanyol at Spotify Camp Nou.

Derby debut

Memphis Depay won a tense game on 20 November 2021 with a penalty just after half-time, and although Xavi had had very little time to implant his ideas on the team, there were already a few signs of his key methods, such as an increased possession count and more intense use of the wings.

Top stats

He has now coached the team through 107 competitive games, with 67 wins, 19 draws and just 21 losses. It was in the last outing, against Alavés, that Lewandowski, again from the penalty spot, recorded the 200th goal of the Xavi era.

Ter Stegen has been the most used player under Xavi (102 games), followed by Gavi (97), Ferran Torres (87) and Frenkie de Jong (84). The top scorer in these two years has been Lewandowski (41).

Having already delivered two major trophies in the La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup, Xavi recently signed an extension on his contract through to 2025, with the optional of an additional year after that. Plenty of time to add to his collection of silverware!
