Unprecedented comeback

Until Saturday, FC Barcelona had never in this century come back to win when trailing 2-0 after 80 minutes

Saturday brought something very, very special at the Estadi Olímpic de Montjuïc. When Barça fans woke up on Sunday morning, the first thing they did was check their phones to make sure it hadn't all been a dream. Two goals down with less than ten minutes of regular time to play and yet they not only came back to make it 2-2, but ended up winning it 3-2!

From dismay to glory

The Catalans very much looked headed for the first defeat of the season. Larsen's goal after 19 minutes had caused enough to worry about already, and when Douvikas added a second for the Galicians, it looked like game over.

Then Lewandowski restored hope with the a goal on 81 minutes. Dramatic comebacks are not something that Barça fans are unfamiliar with, and the buzz around the stadium suggested we might have been about to witness another for the collection. And we were.

Seven amazing minutes

Not only did Barça come back, but they only needed seven minutes to do it. Bang, bang, bang went the goals past an utterly shell-shocked Celta whose good work was all undone in a matter of moments. It happened so quickly that Barça still had all of injury time to spare. Unbelievable!

Lewandowski's audacious finish off Joao Félix's cheeky ball forward, a second from the Pole from a flashy Cancelo assist, and then the Portuguese right back crowned an amazing day by scoring the goal that completed the turnaround.

Five years ago

It was by no means the first time that Barça have turned a 2-0 deficit into defeat, but never quite in such extraordinary last-ditch circumstances as Saturday's dramatic finale.

In 2017/18, they were losing 2-0 to Real Sociedad and didn't start scoring until the 50th minute of what ended up being a 4-2 win. Something similar happened a year before against Eibar, who were also beaten 4-2 but were leading 2-0 until the 73rd minute.

Then in 2013/14, Getafe's 2-0 lead after 41 minutes ended up being a 5-2 win for Barça. And that same season, something not unlike this weekend's game with Celta happened against Villarreal. Barça were losing 2-0 in the 78th minute and an own goal coupled with a Leo Messi brace ended up delivering Barça an amazing 3-2 win.
