Previous games with Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham Hotspur will be the guests at the 58th Joan Gamper Trophy on August 8 at the Olympic Stadium, the second time Spurs have contested the event following their first appearance in 1986. However, in those days the four-team format meant Barça didn't actually get to play them. But there have been other times over the years when the two historic giants have met.
Cup Winners Cup 1981/82
Their first meeting was in the semi-finals of the CWC in 1982. Barça had just beaten Lokomotiv Leipzig of East Germany and Spurs knocked out Eintracht Frankfurt of West Germany. The first leg ended 1-1, with Antonio Olmo scoring for Barça and Graham Roberts for the English side, while a solitary goal from Allan Simonsen in the second leg was enough to send the Catalans through on aggregate. Barça went on to lift the trophy by beating Standard Liege in the final.
Wembley Cup 2009
On 24 July 2009, Barça and Spurs met in the preseason Wembley Cup, and the game ended 1-1. Bojan Krkić put Barça ahead just after the half hour mark, but Jake Livermore nabbed a late equaliser for Spurs. Glasgow Celtic ended up topping the round-robin group, although due to the curious format, Barça never actually faced the Scottish side.
International Champions Cup 2018
The teams would not meet again until the 2018/19 preseason when they met in the International Champions Cup. Barça quickly went 2-0 up thanks to goals from Munir and Arthur Melo, but late goals from Heung-Min Son and Nkoudou levelled things up before Barça eventually won on penalties.
UEFA Champions League 2018/19
Later that season the team would meet in a far more serious environment, the UEFA Champions League group stages, where they were joined in their pool by Inter Milan and PSV Eindhoven. At Wembley, Ernesto Valverde saw his side perform brilliantly to win 4-2, with two-goal Leo Messi in typically amazing form.
By the time the teams met at Camp Nou, Barça had already assured themselves top spot, while Tottenham were still looking to secure their own berth in the last 16. Despite having little to play for, Barça took an early lead through Dembelé. But a Lucas Moura goal five minutes from the end got Spurs the point they needed to qualify for the knockout stages too.
Tottenham would go on to reach the final, losing to the same Liverpool side that had beaten Barça in the semis.
All in all that's three wins and three draws for Barça, while the Londoners are still looking for the first ever victory against Barça, either in competitive or friendly matches.
