Liga clean sheet record matched!
In the 1993/94 season, Deportivo goalkeeper Paco Liaño set the kind of record that many may have suspected could never be matched. He kept an amazing 26 clean sheets that year. But when the whistle blew at the end of Barça's 3-0 defeat of Mallorca on Sunday, and while all eyes were on Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba and thinking about the end of an era at Spotify Camp Nou, many failed to even notice that Liaño's famous record had been equalled.
And with one game to go at Celta, Ter Stegen now has the chance to go one better then the Cantabrian who hung up his gloves in 1998. And in a post-match interview, the German stopper mentioned that that is precisely what he intends to do in Vigo on Sunday night.
Last night he also set a new record for clean sheets in the 21st century in any of Europe's Big Five leagues. Until Sunday, he shared the record with Petr Cech of Chelsea, who kept 25 clean sheets under José Mourinho in 2004/05.
Best Liga coefficient too
Ter Stegen is also on the point of setting the best ever goalkeeping coefficient in Liga history. His 17 goals conceded in 37 games equate to 0.472 goals a game, edging the record shared by Liaño and Jan Oblak (0.473) by the tightest of margins.
There's quite a dilemma here! If he lets in just one goal in Vigo, then that would be the end of any hope of beating that record. If he sat the game out, he'd beat the record anyway. But if he did that, then he would not be able to have a shot at the clean sheets record!
