FC Barcelona completes first phase of adaptation of Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium

Work will now be halted until May 4 because the stadium is being used as the venue for a series of events

FC Barcelona is making good progress with the work on the Espai Barça project and also with the temporary use of Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium as agreed with Barcelona City Council through the Barcelona de Serveis Municipals (B:SM) company, which manages the site. The first phase of adaptation of the stadium is now complete. Work will now be put on hold until May 4 because a number of events have been booked in the stadium this April.

The men's football team will be playing at Montjuïc in the 2023/24 season while development work is being done on the Spotify Camp Nou. Barça started work on the Olympic Stadium last December to adapt it to the club's needs and to the requirements of domestic and international competitions. This began with work on the pitch, changing the drainage, irrigation and water treatment system, as well as installing a new water tank. The size of the pitch has also been adapted to what the club prefers and general improvements have been made to the dressing rooms, press and hospitality areas, as well as the installation of competition and TV broadcasting systems.

Work is also being done on the floodlights, the gates into the ground and the telecommunications networks. This will all resume when the second phase begins after the April break.

Second and third phases

The schedule for the second phase of the work envisages two windows between events that are taking place at Montjuïc. These periods will be used to complete the redevelopments of the stadium, including the transfer of the generator sets, the assembly of a stand for TV commentators, work on the sprinkler system and redevelopment of the stadium entrances. Phase two will run from May 4 to May 12 and then from June 11 to July 3.

The third and final phase will start on July 24 and will end in time for the 2023/24 season. Planned actions include the replacement of terrace seating, adaptation of the emergency exits, new seats in the VIP zone, and the systems required for elite football competitions, such as VAR, tracking cameras, offside cameras, as well as dugouts and goalposts. New ticket booths, merchandising and a Barcelona Supporters Services Office will also be created, and the definitive turf will need to be laid on the pitch.
