FC Barcelona rewrites World Cup record book

FC Barcelona players are rewriting the history books at Qatar 2022, and the tournament is still only a few days old. Gavi, Pedri and Balde have all done some very special things. 

Spectacular debut for Gavi

The 18-year-old wields a magic wand. After setting a host a of records at club level, he is also belying his youthful age on the world stage, not only featuring in the 7-0 battering of Costa Rica but scoring the fifth of those goals himself. 

That lovely finish with the instep was the crowning moment of a delicious performance, which made him Spain's youngest ever goalscorer at the World Cup, at the age of just 18 years, 110 days, and the third youngest for any team.

England's Michael Owen drops off the podium to be replaced by Gavi. Manuel Rosas, who scored for Mexico in 1930, is second and Gavi has become the youngest player to score at a World Cup since the great Pele in 1958. 

Gavi's display was justifiably rewarded with FIFA's MVP award.

Balde and Pedri also star

Balde made his Spain debut on the biggest possible stage and in doing so became the team's second youngest player of all time (Gavi, of course, is top). With Pedri also in the team, this was only the second time in World Cup history that two players aged under 20 years from the same club had started a World Cup match. The World Cup has barely started, but Qatar 2022 is already feeling the impact of FC Barcelona!
