Lewandowski receives the Golden Shoe

The name Robert Lewandowski has also been synonymous with goals. This Wednesday the Polish striker received the Golden Shoe award that he earned in the 2021/22 season as top league goalscorer in Europe. In an event in Barcelona at the Antiga Fàbrica Estrella Damm, the striker was presented with the award for the second year in a row. 

Lewandowski scored 35 goals last season for Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga, placing ahead of his nearest rivals Kylian Mbappé (28), Ciro Immobile (27) and Karim Benzema (27). 

It is the second Golden Shoe award in a row for the Poland international as in the 2020/21 season he scored 41 league goals, surpassing Leo Messi on 30 and Cristiano Ronaldo on 29. Lewandowski is now one of 12 players who have taken the award twice or more and he is hoping to add a third to his name this season, something only Leo Messi has achieved as the Argentina has six awards to his name. 

At the moment the Barça number 9 finds himself in third place in the rankings with 26 points from his 13 goals behind leaders Erling Haaland of Manchester City and Pellegrino of Norwegian side Bodo Glimt who are both on 36 points. 

Lewandowski joins Krankl, Hristo Stoichkov, Juan Antonio Pizzi, Ronaldo Nazario, Henrik Larson, Thierry Henry, Luis Suárez and Leo Messi as Barça players who have won the award at some point in their careers. 

Lewandowski "We are playing really well in the league" 

At the ceremony the Barça striker explained: "I am very proud for the team and I am sure next year will very good." He added: "Wins such as those against Valencia and yesterday's [against Osasuna] are very important and we are playing really well and I am sure the players will be even better in the coming months." 

The Polish striker thanked his current and former team mates for the award, adding: "It is important to work hard to get used to a new team and league; everyone has made it easy for me but I have to keep working hard. I am very happy to have this objective, a great one for me and the Club."
