Araujo's superb season
The 2021/22 season has ended and Ronald Araujo has proved one of the key men. The central defender has become one of the team's leaders, showing character, authority and solidity from defence.
43 games played
The Uruguayan played 43 games across all competitions (2,600 minutes): 30 games in LaLiga, five in the Champions League, five in the Europa League, two in the Copa del Rey, and one in the Spanish Super Cup, starting in 36.
After a great showing the previous season - his first as a first team player despite making his debut the season before - this season has seen Araujo establish himself even further. Barca's number 4 is now a key man both for the defence and for the team itself. His power, speed, anticipation, and strength make him a commanding presence, but his character, authority, and personality make him a true leader.
Many appearances this season
Despite missing a few games due to injury, the Uruguayan was one of the most used players from the squad. He has also scored four goals from defence (all in LaLiga, with three headers). In fact, he is fifth on the appearance list this season (30), with only Sergio Busquets (36), Ter Stegen (35), Gavi (34) and F. de Jong (32) featuring more.
Part of the future
Furthermore, FC Barcelona and Ronald Araujo agreed to extend his contract in April, which now runs through to June 30, 2026, including a buyout clause set at 1 billion euro. The central defence is a rock for both Barça present and future. At the age of 23 years old, he now has 82 competitive games under his belt for the first team, scoring six goals and providing one assist.
