One more point needed with up to eight players unavailable
With qualification for next season’s Champions League already assured, FC Barcelona’s only major mission left in La Liga is to make sure of second spot, which means a place in next season’s Spanish Super Cup.
They only need one point from their last two games to do that, but it does mean going to the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez, home of Getafe, with as many as eight players out.
Getafe and Villarreal to close the campaign
Getafe are five points clear of the relegation zone, so are reasonably safe, although they would obviously like to make doubly certain with a result on Sunday. They managed to win this fixture last season, although it’s Barça who usually take the points.
Should Barça fail to clinch the runners-up spot, either by winning their own game or because results elsewhere go their way, they’ll have a second chance in the season closer against Villarreal at the Camp Nou.
Eight players out
Barça will be going to Getafe without any of the suspended Jordi Alba, Frenkie de Jong and Eric Garcia, the latter unavailable anyway due to a thumb injury.
Gerard Piqué, Sergiño Dest, Sergi Roberto, Pedri and Nico González are also currently dealing with fitness issues, which particularly causes problems in defence, where there are only five fit players in Dani Alves, Mingueza, Lenglet, Umtiti and Ronald Araujo, the latter having received being declared well after suffering concussion against Celta.
