What's happened before after 1-1 draws at Camp Nou?

FC Barcelona drew 1-1 with Napoli in the Europa League on Thursday. It’s the seventh time that the first of two legs in a European competition has ended that way at Camp Nou. On the previous six occasions, none of which were in this competition or in its former guise as the UEFA Cup, Barça eventually advanced on three occasions are were eliminated in the other three.

Of course, things are different this 2021/22 season because the away goals rule has now been abolished. Not that it would have made any difference in any of the six previous instances:

1988/89 Cup Winner’s Cup Round of 16 v Lech Poznan
Barça went on to win

The second leg in Poland also ended 1-1, and the game was decided on penalties. Barça advanced and went onto win the trophy.

1989/90 Cup Winner’s Cup Round of 32 v Legia Warsaw
Barça went on to win

One year later, anther 1-1 draw with a Polish team. This time Barça won the second leg 1-0, Michael Laudrup scoring the solitary goal.

1989/90 European Super Cup Final v AC Milan
Barça went on to lose

In the first of two instances against Italian teams, Barça lost 1-0 in the second leg at the San Siro.

1994/95 Champions League Quarter Final v Paris St Germain
Barça went on to lose

The first of two instances in the Champions League. Although Barça took the lead at the Parc de Princes through Bakero, late goals from Rai and Guérin meant that the French side advanced.

1996/97 Cup Winner’s Cup Semi-Final v Fiorentina
Barça went on to win

Against another Italian team, Fernando Couto and Pep Guardiola scored the goals in a 2-0 win in Florence and Barça went on to beat PSG in the final.

2013/14 Champions League Quarter Final v Atlético Madrid
Barça went on to lose

The most recent instance was in April 2014, when Koke scored the only goal in the second leg at the Vicente Calderón and Atlético moved on to the round.
