FC Barcelona 7–0 Atletico Madrid: Super Cup champions!

Barça dominate the final and win their first trophy of the season

Barça Femení ran out 7-0 winners against Atletico Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup final played at the Las Rozas sports facilities. It's their first trophy of the season and the only one they missed out on last season. A superb game from Graham - which saw her named MVP for her hat trick and 3 assists - crowned off a tremendous showing by the entire team in the final.

In the 4th final between the clubs - all in the Copa de la Reina - Barca went in 3-1 up in the head to head. Both teams had 1 Super Cup each, so the winner here was going to take an outright lead. The match was a big draw and was being shown live on many TV channels. Some simply had to watch the match live though, including Joan Laporta, FC Barcelona president; Ada Colau, Barcelona Mayor; Miquel Iceta, Minister for Sport; and Luis Rubiales, RFEF President.

Coach Jonatan Giráldez made one change to the semi-final line-up, with Leila dropping to the bench and Norway international Engen coming into midfield to form a strong centre of the park alongside Patri. Rolfö played at left back in what was a very attacking line up from the off, with a clear intention to raid down the flanks, with Jenni playing false 9 and dropping off to help Alexia create.

Barça begin as they mean to go on

The game began with Barca asserting their dominance, despite an early claim for a penalty for handball against Marta (ruled accidental). The breakthrough wasn't long in coming though. A corner routine led to a cross being swung in from the right, Rolfö connected with a header that her compatriot Lindahl saved onto the bar, before Engen swept in the opener from inside the box.

The next goal was dead ball dynamite. After a short run up, Hansen curled in a free kick into the left side of the goal from just outside the area, making it 2-0 on 24 minutes in a sign of things to come. Only a 3 minute wait for the next goal, Patri drove through midfield, sliding the ball out to Rolfö - playing virtually as a left winger - who crossed the ball to be met by Hansen sliding in at the far post for her second. The damage was being done from the flanks, with runners not being tracked.

Atletico Madrid occasionally threatened on the break through the nippy Luzmila but their first shot came from Menayo on the 36th minute, grazing the top of the bar. Palos had it covered, but she was a virtual spectator most of the half. Score at the break: 3-0.

Wrapped up early in the second

The second half began with two rapid fire goals. In the 48th minute with the Atletico Madrid defence sleeping, Alexia showed quick thinking to slide Hansen in, who crossed for Rolfö to score at the far post. Two minutes later, Patri tackled and played in Marta again down the right, who crossed for Hansen to nod in off the post to complete her hat trick. The damage was done, there was no way back now. It seemed like every shot on target was a goal.

The Atletico captain, Amanda, came on to try to stem the tide, helping to create a good chance that was saved by Palos, who was always quick off her line to stem any counter attacks. Substitutions were then the order of the day, with Leila, Perreira, and Oshoala coming on, who immediately battled to win a corner that now captain Marta headed over. More substitutions on the 76th minute, which saw Mapi León return from injury.

The final two goals were scored by Liga Iberdrola leading scorer, Martens, both from Hansen crosses - making it 3 assists in the game to add to her hat trick, and the final score 7-0.

There was a nice touch on the 85th minute when ex-Barca player Torrecilla returned to the field after beating brain cancer and was given the armband for Atletico Madrid for the final stages. The Barca squad gave her the bumps after the game too.

Alexia stepped up to the lift the trophy, Hansen rightfully won the MVP award and Barca Femení won their second Spanish Super Cup. Congratulations to the entire squad and coaching staff!
