Messi wins Ballon d’Or
Leo Messi has won yet another Ballon d’Or. After a year in which France Football did not name a winner due to Covid-19, the Argentinian has been revealed as the world player of the year for 2021.
He topped the ranking with 613 points, with Lewandowski second with 580, Jorginho third with 460, and Benzema, 239, and Kanté, 186, missing out on the podium.
Record breaker
Having already collected the biggest individual honour in the game in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015 and 2019, he now has an absolutely spectacular seven wins to his name.
Last season, he was as extraordinary as ever at FC Barcelona, topping the goalscoring charts for the fifth year in a row, and the eighth in total, with 30 goals.
Not only that, but his goal against Real Valladolid meant he topped Pelé as the highest goalscorer of all time for a single club.
More trophies
He helped the team victory in the Copa del Rey, the 35th major trophy that he won as an FC Barcelona player, including ten Liga and four Champions Leagues, and making him the club’s most decorated player ever.
He also had a fantastic year with Argentina, who he led to victory in the Copa America, dazzling along the way by topping the stats both for goals and assists and collecting the MVP award.
Another wonderful year, and rightly recognised with yet another Ballon d’Or to add to his glowing collection.
