How Xavi reacted to FC Barcelona's three goals against Villarreal

De Jong, Memphis and Coutinho scored the goals at the Estadio de la Cerรกmica, but here we turn the camera on the coach

FC Barcelonaโ€™s 3-1 win against Villarreal was not just important for the three points, but also because of the way it happened, in a difficult game that was heading for a 1-1 draw before two late goals changed everything.

Here we focus on how Xavi reacted to the three goals his first Barรงa game as coach away from Camp Nou.

Frenkie de Jong

After a first half of many chances but no goals, Barรงa took the lead in a goal that has suspense included. De Jong converted the rebound but the original strike had come from Memphis, who was called offside. VAR analysed the images, and by a matter of millimetres, the decision was overturned and the goal stood.

Memphis Depay

Villarreal responded well and not only did Samuel Chukwueze equalise with 14 minutes left to play but the home side were on top in the final minutes and threatening to snatch victory. But Memphis scored at the other end. Some wonderful control, then he brilliantly dribbled round keeper Rulli before coolly slotting the home through the legs of Estupiรฑรกn.

Philippe Coutinho

Deep into injury time, any chance of Villarreal getting anything out of this match ended when the Brazilian was fouled in the area and took the penalty himself. And it was a delightful conversion to make sure of three crucial points.
