Yulimar Rojas takes Barça v Getafe honorary kick-off
Barça’s triple jumper Yulimar Rojas, winner of the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics with a world record leap, was celebrated in the build-up to today’s game against Getafe by taking the honorary kick-off.
It was a fitting tribute to the Venezuelan, whose 15.67 metre jump in Japan put an incredible 17cm on the previous record, making her the club’s first female gold medallist at the games.
Tribute to the best in Europe
There was also hearty applause before the game in honour of the players who took every one of the women’s awards at this week’s UEFA gala.
Sandra Paños was named best goalkeeper, Irene Paredes (in recognition of her great year at PSG) was best defender, Jenni Hermoso was named best forward and Alexia Putellas was both best midfielder and best women’s player overall.
The stadium also observed a minute’s silence before the game in memory of all the club’s members and fans who have passed away as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
