Barça Women to play in Women's International Champions Cup in the US
Barça Women, recent winners of the Champions League, will travel to the United States this summer to play in the prestigious Women's International Champions Cup (WICC). Between August 18 and 21, Jonatan Giráldez's side will take part in the competition together with another of the most powerful teams in Europe, Olympique Lyonnais, as well as North American teams competing in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) in Portland Thorns and Houston Dash.
The Women's International Champions Cup will be held at Providence Park Stadium, home of the Portland Thorns. The tournament will consist of four matches played across two legs. In the first, Olympique Lyonnais, the reigningt WICC champions, will play against Barça Women. Meanwhile, Portland Thorns, winners of the 2020 NWSL Fall Series and the 2021 NWSL Challenge Cup, will play in the first round against Houston Dash, the 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup champions. The two winning sides will advance to the final, thus guaranteeing a showdown between the US and Europe, which will be played on August 21. The other two teams will compete for third and fourth place in the competition on the same day.
The blaugranes, who claimed the treble of league, cup and Champions League last season, are in the midst of preseason under coach Jonatan Giráldez.
