Royal wants to be a success at Barça

The Brazilian full back made his Barça debut in the Gamper game and here explains his hopes for the future as a blaugrana and his footballing beginnings in Brazil

Royal has given his first interview as a Barça player. The right back signed for FC Barcelona back on 2 June and the Brazilian spoke to Barça TV+ for the Welcome, Royal programme.

Below we take a look at the highlights from the interview:

Arrival in Barcelona

"I am really happy to get to know the city. Barcelona is very nice and for me it's a dream to come to Barcelona and be at such as big club. I have wanted to join Barça since I was little."

Barça objectives

"I want to be a success at Barça. At a club this size, I just want to do well."

Why Royal?

"Royal is a nickname that my aunt gave me when I was little because I cried a lot and I opened my mouth a lot, like a jelly from the Royal brand."

His beginnings in the favela

"In the favela I learnt that in life, if you want something, you can achieve anything. My first memory of playing with the ball is in the favela, when I still didn't know how to play football. There is where I learnt."

Starting out in Brazil

"I learnt a lot in Ponte Preta with the players and with the coach that I had. It was a great experience and it has helped me get to FC Barcelona."

"In Atlético Mineiro I grew as a peron and I learnt that football has good and bad moments."

His spell at Betis

"Playing at Betis helped me a lot with adapting to the La Liga and the country. It also helped me get to being at Barça."

"At Betis I have improved a lot defensively. I have learned to be more focused during the whole game. It's one of my best memories given how much I grew as a person and a player."

Who has played for both Barça and Betis in the 21st century?
Many footballers have played for both the blaugranes and the Andalusians, but you only have to guess those who have done so from 2001 to the present day!

Dani Alves, a role model

"I have spoken to Dani Alves and he has given me some advice. I have followed him since I was young. I admire for his personality and his quality; he's really competitive. He's a great player and a great guy."

More personal side

"I like being at home with my family and playing on the Play Station. I have a happy and fun family."

"Being happy is my best virtue. If I have a fault, it's that I am very competitive, I don't like to lose."

"I have some 30 tattoos. The most special ones are one of my brother and another that reminds me of my origins in the favela."
