FC Barcelona win 13 medals at Tokyo 2020 Olympics

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games over, it’s time to check in on how our athletes performed.

And it quite some medal haul for the blaugrana men and women, who are coming home from Japan with an impressive collection of 13 different golds, silvers and bronzes. 

Yulimar Rojas leaps for gold

The Venezuelan made history in the women’s triple jump. She not only won gold but also broke a world record that Inessa Kravets of the Ukraine had held since 1995. What’s more, she became the very first woman from FC Barcelona to top the podium at the Olympics.

Before her, the only previous Barça winners had all been men, Ferrer, Guardiola, Pinilla, Saviola, Messi, Neymar and Rafinha (football) and Jerome Fernández, Sorhaindo, Nodesbo and Andersson (handball).

There were four more gold medals to come for Barça, as Ludovic Fàbregas, Dika Mem, Timothey N’Guessan and Melvyn Richardson all featured in France’s handball team that beat Denmark in the final.

Football silver

Fridolina Rolfö (Sweden) and Pedri, Oscar Mingueza and Eric Garcia (Spain) reached the finals of the men’s and women’s football competitions. Sadly for them, they were all on the losing sides. Canada ended up winning the women’s gold in a penalty shootout, while the Barça trio in the men’s final were beaten by a Brazil team featuring two former Barça men in Dani Alves and Malcom, the latter scoring the winner in extra time. 

Handball bronze

Gonzalo Pérez de Vargas, Raúl Entrerríos, playing at his last Olympics, Aleix Gómez and Ángel Fernández defeated Egypt (featuring new Barça signing Ali Zein) in the bronze medal match to add four more medals to Barça’s impressive tally. 

Olympic diplomas

Olympic Diplomas are awarded to all athletes who finished in the top eight in their event, and a further nine of the Barça delegation received one of those as consolation: Adrián Ben (men’s 800 metres), Pau Gasol, Àlex Abrines, Leandro Bolmaro and Nico Laprovittola (men’s basketball), Miki Delàs (men’s field hockey), Ali Zein (men’s handball) and Lieke Martens and Giovana Queiroz (women’s football). 

The 13 medals from Tokyo mean that since Barça was first represented at the Games in 1920, the club has won a total of 78 medals.
