A 'dream come true' for Memphis
Memphis Depay is finally an FC Barcelona player for real. After putting pen to paper, the Dutchman appeared at the Camp Nou for a presentation, describing the feeling as “a dream come true.”
He has a contract until 2023 and after parading on the pitch in his new strip, he was joined for a press conference by president Joan Laporta, the vice-president for sport Rafa Yuste and the director of football Mateu Alemany.
The fourth new signing of the close season was announced last June 19. He has played at Camp Nou before, wearing the shirt of Olympique Lyonnais and has also worked before with Ronald Koeman when he was coach of the Holland national team.
"He played me as centre forward” recalls Memphis. “He made me feel very comfortable and must thank him for all that ... I am delighted to be here. The team is ready for the new season and to start collecting titles.”
“Playing alongside Messi is a dream. I have seen so many of his games, he’s a legend. Yesterday I paid a visit to the museum and saw all of his Ballon d’Ors. It’s awesome.”
The prophecy
Laporta also revealed a secret about Memphis: "His mother told me that when he was five years old, his grandfather gave him a Barça shirt as a gift. It was a prophecy.”
The player himself confirmed the story and said “I’m sure he would have been a very proud man today.”
