A stat-tastic season!
The Barça women’s team completed a historic treble this season of Liga Iberdrola, Copa de la Reina and the coveted first Champions League title. But along the way, they also amassed some quite remarkable stats.
Win after win after win
2020/21 has been a near-perfect season for the team. They were only beaten twice, 2-1 by Manchester City in the Champions League quarter finals, although they had already won convincingly in the first leg, and a solitary league defeat, 4-3 at Atlético Madrid
There were also two draws, one on the Super Cup semi-final that they lost to Atlético on penalties, and another against PSG in Europe, although they still progressed on aggregate.
The team completed the league season with an astonishing 99 points, just three short of the maximum 102.
Goals and goals and goals
Jennifer Hermoso finished the season as top scorer in both the Liga Iberdrola and the Champions League. With 18 goals each, Alexia and Oshoala ensured that Barça players filled the podium in the domestic championship. But another 15 players (Martens, Mariona, Bruna, Torrejón, Aitana, Hansen, Patri, Crnogorcevic, Vicky Losada, Mapi León, Melanie, Hamraoui, Leila, Laia Codina and Berta Bou) also contributed to the haul of 208 goals:
28 in the Champions League
167 in the Liga Iberdrola
12 in the Copa de la Reina
1 in the Super Cup
That tally in the league tops the previous record of 1997/98, when Club Femení Barcelona (prior to becoming a full section of the club), netted 137 times. As part of the Barça setup, the team’s record until now was 119 goals in the first league season of 2011/12.
But’s not just in attack but also in defence where the team has been formidable. Only 25 goals were scored against them this season:
6 in the Champions League
15 in the Liga Iberdrola
3 in the Copa de la Reina
1 in the Super Cup
Sandra Paños and Cata Coll have both worked wonders between the Barça sticks, although the whole defence is also to be thanked for such a jaw-dropping achievement.
