Messi flies clear in the Pichichi chase

Argentinian now has 25 goals in La Liga, four more than his closest challenger, Karim Benzema

Leo Messi just does not stop. A brace against Getafe and that’s 25 goals in La Liga, sending him flying ahead in the race for the leading goalscorer trophy. He has gone four clear of second-placed Karim Benzema (21) and has five more than Gerard Moreno (20), who he’ll be facing next Sunday against Villarreal.

Getafe is a side that has held out well against Messi at the Camp Nou in recent years. Not since 2016 had the Argentinian scored against them in a home fixture.

And not only did he score twice tonight, but he also put two balls onto the woodwork and turned down the chance to score a hat-trick by allowing Antoine Griezmann to take the injury time penalty instead.

Oh, and he also assisted Ronald Araujo for the fourth goal… Not a bad night’s work.

Tonight’s game was also the 500th time that Messi has appeared alongside fellow Barça legend Gerard Piqué. Two players that have contributed to yet another win that keeps the blaugrana in very strong contention for the championship.
