Fourth Champions League semifinal in five years!
Barça Women are in the semifinals of the Champions League! After eliminating Manchester City in the quarter-finals, Barça have reached the penultimate round of the top European competition for the fourth time in five seasons; a milestone that only Olympique Lyonnais have also achieved in the last five years.
It began in 2017. The team, then coached by Xavi Llorens, qualified for the semifinals for the first time, beating Rosengard with the likes of Marta Vieira and Lieke Martens in their ranks. After losing in the 2018 quarterfinals against Olympique Lyonnais, Lluís Cortés replaced Fran Sánchez as coach, and in 2019 his team defeated the Norwegian side LSK Kvinner by an overall score of 4-0, before making history against Bayern Munich.
The last precedent dates from August 2020. In a competition reformulated by the Covid-19 crisis, Barça beat Atlético Madrid in a single match at San Mamés (1-0). Now back in the semis, the Catalans will face the winner of the game between Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique Lyonnais.
Golden generation
Barça are experiencing some golden years with an unparalleled generation of footballers. There are nine who, including this year's edition, will have played the four Champions League semifinals with Barça: Paños, Melanie, Losada, Marta, Mariona, Alexia, Patri, Aitana and Leila.
