FC Barcelona to face Athletic Club in the Super Cup final
FC Barcelona now know who their opponents will be in the final of the Spanish Super Cup on Sunday in Seville. Standing between Barça and a 14th Spanish Super Cup trophy will be Athletic Club after the team from Bilbao beat Real Madrid 2-1 in the second semi final on Thursday thanks to a brace from Raúl García.
The victory for Los Leones means that they will face Barça for the fourth time in the competition but it will be the first meeting under the new format of a one off final at a neutral venue. Barça have lifted the trophy on two of the three occasions they have met Athletic in the final over two legs, the most recent coming in 2010.
Barça looking for number 14
Barça booked their place in the final on Wednesday with a enthralling penalty shoot out win over Real Sociedad with goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen the hero.
Barça have lifted the trophy on no less than 13 occasions, two more than their nearest rivals Real Madrid. The blaugranes have a chance to extend that lead with a win on Sunday to claim the Spanish Super Cup trophy which they last lifted in 2019 with a win over Sevilla in Tangier, Morocco.
