Tremendous Ter Stegen
Marc ter Stegen was the absolute hero of the Spanish Super Cup semi-final victory against Real Sociedad. He made six saves during the actual game, equalling his season best against Dynamo Kiev in the Champions League and also played a central role in winning the penalty shootout.
“I’m very happy for the team because we made such a huge effort” he told Movistar after the game was over. “I always try to be one hundred per cent and we always have to win these games.”
33 years since last shootout
His actions to keep Barça in the game were the kind of things that only the very best goalkeepers in the world can do. And that was for 90 minutes plus extra time and in a gripping penalty shootout to decide which team is going to Seville on Sunday.
It was the first time since the 1998 Copa del Rey Final that a competitive Barça game has been decided on penalties, a game that was against Mallorca. Five of the Barça players today, Araujo, Mingueza, Pedri, Trincao and Riqui Puig, weren’t even born at the time!
