Ansu Fati and Pedri are among the candidates for the ‘Golden Boy’
As usual every year, the Italian sports newspaper Tuttosport presents the Golden Boy, the award that accredits the best young player of the year. This edition is looking for the under-21 footballer who has shone brightest in Europe during 2019/20, and Barcelona players Ansu Fati and Pedri are still vying for the award.
This is the Golden Boy’s third round of voting. It began with a list of 100 candidates, then it was reduced to 80 and now it's down to 60. The voting has taken place over the internet, where users around the world will be able to continue voting for their favourite young player.
It should be remembered that this award was previously won by Leo Messi (2005), and also former Barça player Cesc Fàbregas (2006), as well as several football stars such as Wayne Rooney, Sergio Agüero, Paul Pogba, Raheem Sterling and Kylian Mbappé.
A record-breaking story
In 2019/20, Ansu Fati broke countless records, both in the league and in the Champions League. The second youngest player to make his league debut with Barça, the youngest player to score for Barça in the domestic tournament, the youngest to start at the Camp Nou, the youngest to score and assist in the league, the youngest scorer at the Camp Nou, the youngest to make his Champions League debut with Barça and the youngest goal scorer in the premier European competition.
As the 5th highest scorer in the first-team, the No.31 fired home some important goals as five of his eight were decisive for the outcome of a match.
Pedri is already training with the blaugrana
Pedro González 'Pedri' is one of the new members of the Barça squad for 2020/21, and the former Las Palmas player has already been training at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper. He had a good season in the Segunda División A during 2019/20. An undisputed starter in the Las Palmas XI, he scored four goals in his 34 games.
