Women’s Champions League to resume with 8-team final stage in Basque Country

This Wednesday, UEFA has announced that the Women’s Champions League will be decided from August 21 to 30 as an 8-team final tournament to be held at San Mamés (Bilbao) and Anoeta (San Sebastian), both in the Basque Country in northern Spain. The competition was originally suspended due to the Covid-19 crisis just before the quarter finals were due to be played. The final was scheduled to be played in the Austrian capital city of Vienna.

The quarter final pairings have not changed, but the ties will now be single-legged affairs. Barça, runners-up last season, have been drawn against Atlético Madrid. The winners of that game will take on the winners of the game between Glasgow FC and Wolfsburg. On the other side of the draw, defending champions Olympique Lyon play Bayern Munich, and Paris Saint-Germain meet Arsenal.

The opening games will be played on August 21 and 22, and the semis a few days later on August 25 and 26. Anoeta will host the final on August 30 at 8.00pm CEST.  A draw in Nyon on June 26 will decide the order of play in the previous rounds.

The Spanish Football Federation, the hosts of the competition, will be giving a press conference at noon this Thursday to provide further details of the competition.
