Stat of the day | 116: The goals that Barça scored in the 2016/17 league season
This Thursday, May 21, marks three years since the 2016/17 league season ended. A championship which was won the last day by Real Madrid and by only three points (93 to 90). However, that season went down in history because, so far, it's the one where Barça have scored the most goals in the league: 116.
Season | Coach | Goals | LaLiga champions? |
2016/17 | Luis Enrique | 116 | No |
2012/13 | Tito Vilanova | 115 | Yes |
2011/12 | Pep Guardiola | 114 | No |
2015/16 | Luis Enrique | 112 | Yes |
2014/15 | Luis Enrique | 110 | Yes |
Luis Enrique's men surpassed the record from 2012/13, when Tito Vilanova's side scored 115 goals. Oddly enough, the five seasons with the most goals for Barça in La Liga have all come in the last decade, and they all have the same common denominator... Leo Messi, the top scorer in the history of the competition.
In all the competitions in 2016/17, the team scored 171 goals, the fourth most scored in a season in the history of the club. They are made up by the 116 in the league, 26 in the Champions League, 24 in the Copa del Rey and five in the Spanish Super Cup. Messi, naturally, was the top scorer that season with 54 goals in total, 37 of which came in the league, earning him the Pichichi and the Golden Boot.
Just three years ago, on May 21, 2017, the Catalans hosted Eibar in what was Luis Enrique's last game at the Camp Nou (although there was still the Copa del Rey final at the Calderón against Alavés), and the Asturian said goodbye to the fans with a 4-2 victory. However, it was not enough to win the league as Real Madrid also beat Málaga 0-2. That was also the last official match played by the trident: Leo Messi, Luis Suárez and Neymar Jr, since the Uruguayan was suspended for the cup final and then, in the summer, the Brazilian would go to PSG.
In total, in that league season, 15 different players found the net, as well as two own goals. Think you can name them all? Test yourself!
