Iberdrola league champions 2019/20!

Barça are champions of the Iberdrola League for 2019/20 after the Board of Directors and Delegate Commission of the Royal Spanish Football Federation ratified this Friday its proposal made to the Commission of Territorial Presidents last Wednesday for all non-professional competitions to be declared concluded in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Due to the impossibility of playing out the last eight sets of fixtures due to the lack of safety guarantees for all parties involved, the RFEF has declared the Primera Iberdrola and Reto Iberdrola seasons over. Barça, who topped the table before the interruption, have been declared winners and will be joined by second-placed Atlético Madrid in the 2020/21 Champions League.

Another decision reached is that there will be no relegation from the top division, but Santa Teresa and Eibar will be promoted from the second, meaning there will be 18 top flight teams in the 2020/21 season. After earning a fine third place in the Reto Iberdrola, the reserves will be staying in the second division.

Of course, the team would have much preferred to have won the title under different circumstances, but fully appreciates that the battle to contain Covid-19 is the most important matter right now.

Fifth championship

Having played 21 games, the side coached by Lluís Cortés were runaway leaders with 19 wins, 2 draws and no defeats, a spectacular goal difference of 86-6 and a 9-point lead on second placed Atlético.

After seeing the title slip away at the final gasp in four consecutive seasons, this ends the drought and matches Athletic Club’s record of five domestic league titles.

Cup put off until next season

The RFEF has also announced that the Copa de la Reina 2019/20 will be concluded in the 2020/21 season. Barça were set to play a single-leg semi-final against Sevilla at the Estadi Johan Cruyff, while EDF Logroño and Athletic Club were meeting in the other.

Champions League TBD

The leading clubs in Europe met online this Wednesday to decide what to do about the UEFA Women’s Champions League 2019/20. The plan is to complete the schedule as soon as the health authorities allow. The ECA will be holding several further meetings before it announces any definitive solution. Barça were through to a quarter final against Atlético Madrid before the crisis brought a halt to play.
