1-1: Traditionally positive

Barça returned from Naples with a 1-1 draw to take into the second leg at Camp Nou. A win would have been nicer, but it’s still a scoreline that puts the Catalans in the driving seat for a berth in the quarter finals.

Indeed, history suggests that 1-1 away is not a bad scoreline to take into the second leg of a European tie. It’s happened fourteen times before, and Barça have gone on to qualify on all but two occasions.

The two setbacks were in 1993 and 2003, both in the Champions League, when CSKA Moscow first and Juventus second won their games at the Camp Nou.

On three occasions there have been draws, but each time Barça progressed albeit in different ways. In 1963 they beat Beleneses of Portugal in a playoff, in 1978 they beat AZ of Holland on penalties and in 1987 they beat Flamurtani of Albania on away goals.

Big recent wins

Very encouragingly, the four most convincing second leg victories were also the four most recent, including an 8-0 drubbing of Matador Púchov of Slovakia in 2003.

Since then, Barça followed 1-1 draws at Lyon, Stuttgart and Chelsea, all in the Champions League round of 16, with wins by a margin of at least three goals at Camp Nou.

Leo Messi (2) and Ousmane Dembélé were on target two seasons ago after the game has Stamford Bridge had ended with an identical score the one in Naples on Tuesday.
