Leo Messi, the five-time winner of the award, is accompanied by De Jong, Ter Stegen, Griezmann and Lieke Martens as candidates in this year's edition

The shortlist for the 2019 Ballon d'Or, organised by France Football magazine, was revealed on Monday evening. In total, five FC Barcelona players are in contention for the prize: Leo Messi, Frenkie de Jong, Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Antoine Griezmann, in a men's category which includes 30 options, and Lieke Martens, up against a further 19 choices in the women's category. The prizegiving ceremony will be held on Monday, December 2nd at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, presented by Sandy Héribert and Didier Drogba.

Messi is the recent winner of 'The Best' award, and is up for an award that he has won on five occasions (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2015): The first was when France Football decided the honour, with the others a collaboration ceremony between the French publication and FIFA.

Lieke Martens was the recipient of 'The Best' prize from FIFA in 2017. This is her first nomination in a category that France Football are running for the second time.

Ter Stegen also nominated for the Yashin Award

In honour of legendary goalkeeper Lev Yashin, a goalkeepers-only prize has been created. Ter Stegen, who is shortlisted for the men's Balon d'Or honour, also features in this category with nine other candidates.

Besides these awards, the Kapa Award for the best Under-21 player in the world will also be presented in the ceremony.
