Sixth 'pichichi' award for Leo Messi

The Argentine striker tops the scoring charts in the Spanish league for the third season in a row

No discussions needed. Leo Messi has claimed the 'Pichichi' Trophy awarded to La Liga's top scorer over a season for the sixth time in his career. The Argentine scored 36 goals in 38 matches, a distance ahead of second placed Karim Benzema of Real Madrid and his Barça team mate Luis Suárez who both scored 21 goals in the 2018/19 league campaign.

Messi's sixth award equals the legendary striker Telmo Zarra and his third consecutive 'pichichi' sees him repeat the feat achieved by Mexican striker Hugo Sánchez with Real Madrid between 1986 and 1988.

Leo Messi has dominated the competition in recent year and with six wins he also equals Jimmy Greaves' record in the top flight of English football. In Germany Gerd Müller holds the record with seven, in Italy Swedish striker Gunner Nordahl with five and in France three players, Carlos Bianchi, Jean-Pierre Papin and Delio Onnis, are all level on five also.
