Messi reaches 600 goals for Barça
Lionel Messi has now reached 600 goals with FC Barcelona. The Argentinian, who is currently La Liga’s Pichichi top scorer and the European Golden Boot leader, achieved a new landmark after his brace against Liverpool at Camp Nou on Wednesday. The Argentinian has taken 683 matches in Barça's first team to reach the new mark (0.88 goals per match) and he has done so on a very special day, the 14th anniversary of his first official goal for the blaugranes.
To understand the size of this achievement, it’s good to have others in mind, for example, the top historical scorers from the main European clubs. How many did Gerd Müller score, Bayern’s record holder? Or Ian Rush, Liverpool’s goal machine? And what about those players from Madrid, Juve, Arsenal or AC Milan? Spoiler: few come close to Messi's 600 goals.
It’s also worth remembering how many goals the second highest scorer in the history of Barça, César Rodríguez, scored - 232. Messi surpassed his mark in March 2012 and since then has continued to widen the gap. Now he needs just 96 more goals to triple César’s total... and he was a great goal scorer in the 40s and 50s!
