In final quarter hour, look out for Barça!
Barça's win over Atlético on Saturday night, thanks to a pair of goals from Luis Suárez and Leo Messi, in the 85th and 86t minutes, was just the newest example of late-game heroics from the Catalans. In fact, just four days earlier they scored twice in second half injury time to salvage a draw at Villarreal.
So it is not surprising that Barça lead La Liga in goals scored over the final quarter hour of play this season, with a total of 25, which is 31% of their 81 overall goals in the Spanish First Division. Real Madrid are a distant second in that category, with 17 goals in minutes 76–90.
Here is Barça's goal breakdown this season.
Min 1–15: 8 goals
Min 16-30: 13 goals
Min 31-45: 12 goals
Min 46-60: 8 goals
Min 61-75: 15 goals
Min 76-90: 25 goals
Second-half goal leaders, too
Barça also lead La Liga in goals scored in the second half of their games, with 48, well ahead of Real Madrid's 34. With so many decisive goals in the latter stages of their games, Barça are proving their ability to stay fresh when it matters most. Perhaps not surprisingly, Barça are also the team that has earned the most points (10) from losing positions in the final ten minutes of their games.
