FCB Women's team claim the Copa Catalunya, the Liga and the Copa de la Reina

The FC Barcelona Women’s team have completed a spectacular season. After they claimed the Copa de la Reina this weekend against Zaragoza (4-0), the team managed by Xavi Llorens took their silverware tally to three trophies in one season: the Liga, the Copa Catalunya and the Copa de la Reina. They’ve won eight titles in the last four seasons: four Copas de Catalunya, two Ligas and two Copas de la Reina. Nothing more can possibly be asked of them on the national level, said manager Llorens: “it has been a strange season. We had a slow start, and a lot of doubts after the first results. After that we improved and the girls put in incredible work. We’ve conquered everything we set out to conquer and next season we’ll try to do it again.”

The first title of the season was the Copa Catalunya, when Barça defeated Espanyol in a penalty shootout after a one-all draw. This was Barca’s fourth consecutive Copa Catalunya, a tally that now equals Espanyol’s record.

Second consecutive Liga

Barça needed to win the last game of the competition, away to the league leaders Athletic Club, in order to win the title. “Up until the match at San Mamés we had done all of our work. Once there, we could only hope to play a good game and fortunately, we did,” said the Barça manager.

The team played a memorable match, they showed their talent, patience and capacity to grind out a result. The San Mamés, with 25,000 fans in the stands, was unable to stop Barça from winning 1-2, which meant that the Blaugrana were league champions for the second successive season.

Queens of the Cup

The final challenge of the season was to reclaim the Copa de la Reina. In the final Llorens’ players flexed their muscle and showed why they are the best team in Spain. Despite Prainsa Zaragoza’s eagerness to win, Barça rampaged to a 4-0 victory. It should also be noted that Alexia scored one of the best goals of the season in the final.

“Our rival had nothing to lose, and they gave it a go. But we did our job. Despite the heat, we worked as a team. The players were concentrated and they were very eager,” said Llorens.

The next challenge, improving in Europe

Barça’s goal next season is to be more competitive in Europe. “In Europe we need to be lucky in the draw. We’re aware that there’s a big difference in quality between us and other European teams, but we’ll do our best to enjoy the moment and play well,” explained Llorens.

This year Arsenal eliminated Barça from the Champions League by a eye-opening 7-0 scoreline.
