Luis Suárez sets new personal best for goals in a season
After scoring four goals against Sporting Gijón, Luis Suárez has now found the net 53 times in 49 official matches this season. That’s the highest tally of his professional career, with his previous best being 49 goals in 48 games in the 2009/10 season with Ajax Amsterdam.
By becoming the first player to ever score four goals in two consecutive Liga matches (Deportivo and Sporting), the Uruguayan has moved back to the top of the Liga goalscoring charts with 34, three more than Cristiano Ronaldo’s 31. He’s also surpassed the 47 goals scored by Ronaldo (the Brazilian) in a Barça season and is on good course to win the European Golden Shoe for the second time, and the first since his move to Catalonia.
In his first season after joining from Liverpool (2014/15), Suárez scored 25 goals in 43 games, an especially remarkable figure considering he didn’t even start playing until October because of the FIFA suspension. He’s doubled that number in his second season, as his love affair with FC Barcelona moves up to a whole new level.
