FC Barcelona Lassa v Magnus Futsal: Penalty shootout heartbreak (3-3, 1-3)
FC Barcelona Lassa lost out on the lottery of a penalty shootout against Brazil’s Magnus Futsal after leading in normal time right until the last minute of the match.
Marc Carmona’s side therefore miss out on a place in the International Futsal Cup final following the cruel ending to the game.
The stats gave an accurate reflection of the first-half story, with Barça having 12 shots compared to Magnus’ three, yet the scoreline did not as the two sides went into the break at 1-1. Futsal legend Falcao gave the Brazilians the lead but Dyego brought things level one minute before the interval.
Magnus started the second period sharper, and Barça were made to pay for some slack defending as Simi was able to restore his side’s advantage just two minutes into the half. Nevertheless, Barça had the ideal response minutes later as Marc Tolrà was on hand to score the rebound after Ferrao’s close-range effort was parried by the goalkeeper.
From then on, it was all Barça, and the mounting pressure eventually manifested into a goal to take the lead for the first time in the match. Ferrao’s strike with five minutes left looked as though Barça had done enough to reach the final.
Yet it was not to be. Simi’s left-footed drive right in the closing moments made it 3-3 to send the game to extra-time. The additional two halves saw no further goals, and the winner would be decided via a dreaded penalty shootout.
Rodrigo for Magnus, then Lozano for Barça converted the first spot-kicks. Simi made it 2-1 but Ferrao missed his penalty, which Falcao took full advantage of to put his side into the final.
