André Gomes: FC Barcelona relates to my personality
André Gomes spoke to the press on Wednesday for the first time as an FC Barcelona player, where he expressed his delight at joining “the best club” for his growth.
The Portuguese European championship winner had his medical, put pen-to-paper on his contract and wore the Barça jersey in front of his new supporters before speaking to the media. Here is the pick of what he had to say:
The right choice
“I believe I have chosen the best club and I have not made a mistake. Barça relates to my way of playing football and to my identity.”
Adapting
“It is important for me is to enjoy playing football, continue learning and to adapt to Barça’s philosophy.”
The manager
“He thanked me (on the phone) for joining and he was very happy, as am I. The most important is what the manager demands, and I intend to adapt as soon as possible. For me, it doesn’t matter whether I play on the left or the right.”
Family
“(My father) was here before many years ago and for him it’s so emotional, both for me and my family. I knew he would end up being proud.”
Technical secretary Robert Fernández
“He is a player that has quality, youth and strength and who will help us amplify the centre of the park”
“He has time to demonstrate his qualities and has great potential. Andre was a long-term target and we had to win the fight (to sign him).”
Director of professional sports Albert Soler
Albert Soler says that the transfer was not planned for in the initial Budget but that it was an important opportunity, and it was “the best moment to sign him”
