Aitana Bonmatí takes Laureus award for World Sportswomen of the Year

The blaugrana footballer is the first Catalan woman to take the award for her achievements in sport in 2023

Aitana Bonmatí continues to be recognised as one the most prominent women in sport. In the 25th edition of the Laureus Awards, the footballer was named World Sportswomen of the Year for 2023, joining an illustrious list of winners such as Simone Biles, Serena Williams, Yerena Isinbayeva and Jennifer Capriati. 

The Ballon d'Or winner was also voted The Best by UEFA and can now add the prestigious Laureus award to her collection, becoming the first Catalan woman to win the prize. Aitana pipped fellow sporstwomen such as skier Mikaela Shiffrin, tennis player Iga Swiatek and the track and field athletic stars Faith Kipyegon, Shericka Jackson and Sha'Carri Richardson. 

A year to remember 

Well into 2024, Aitana Bonmatí continues to collect accolades for her exceptional 2023. After having won almost everything there is to win on an individual and team level, the midfielder has picked up another important award at the Laureus gala in Madrid. 

The prize for World Sportswomen of the Year can be added to the League, Super Cup and Champions League titles won with Barça as well as the World Cup with the Spanish national side. On an individual level, Aitana has been named Ballon d'Or, The Best and most valuable player in numerous competitions and tournaments in which she has taken part.
