Xavi says second place objective after losing out on league title

The Barça coach reacts positively to finishing runners up in La Liga and to Pedri's brace against Rayo

Barça coach Xavi Hernández was more than satisfied with his team's performance in the 3-0 win over Rayo Vallecano at the Estadi Olímpic, a result that guarantees the blaugranes runners-up spot in La Liga. "It was the objective after not being able to compete for the league title," said the boss. "In general today, the team played well," he added.

The coach admitted that, due to the team's position in the league, they had conceded too much defensively. Nevertheless, he felt that the team had responded well to ensure qualification for next season's Spanish Super Cup where they will face Athletic Club in the semi-finals.

Xavi went on to explain that the team "had improved their game" with regards to last season even though he recognised that results were not as good this season. Furthermore, he revealed that he felt the team had "competed better" in the 22/23 campaign.

Amongst the positives for the coach was the performance of Pedri and his two goals against Rayo. "I am happy because that will give him confidence. He needs to get into a rhythm and compete - we are managing his playing time and I am happy with him," he concluded.
