The FC Barcelona Electoral Board, following the meeting on Friday 15 January 15 between the club’s Managing Committee and the Government of Catalonia, has been informed that it is impossible to go ahead with the Presidential Elections scheduled for January 24 and the election process is thus provisionally suspended.
According to article 44.4.c of the FC Barcelona Statutes, the Electoral Board wishes to state:
- The decision to postpone the elections can only be made by the body that called those elections, which may either be the Board of Directors or the Managing Commission, pursuant to article 43 of the said FC Barcelona Statutes.
- The club needs a Board of Directors with full power and capacity to make decisions at such an important moment in the club’s history, and as soon as possible.
- It is urgent for the Managing Committee and the Catalan Government to agree to the legislative measures to guarantee the right for all members to vote as soon as possible. It therefore supports the proposal made by the Managing Committee to the Government to urgently make the modifications required to enable postal voting. It believes that such a measure will guarantee the possibility to vote on a new date regardless of the pandemic situation.
- It is noted that the current election method is out-dated and it is an urgent priority for it to be modernised in keeping with the means currently available.
- It is at the full disposal of the club to ensure that the election process can be resumed as soon as possible.
The Electoral Board is formed, pursuant to article 44 of the FC Barcelona Statutes, by five members chosen by a draw from among all members with the right to vote and was constituted on 22 December 2020 in the Auditori 1899. Its president is Xavier Guixeras, and the other members are Jordi Aranda, Antonio G. Bermúdez, Josep M. Balart and Jesús Valdés. The secretary is the same secretary of the Managing Commission, Josep Maria Mir, assisted by the Members Ombudsman Joan Manel Trayter.
